PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Community Access Program Youth Initiative (CAP-YI) is part of Industry Canada's Community Access Program (CAP), which aims to ensure that Canadians have affordable public access to the Internet.

The objectives of the CAP Youth Initiative are:

• To support the sustainability and long term viability of CAP sites by providing work experience for young Canadians in CAP sites;
• To increase the use of the Information Highway across Canada to promote economic and social development at the community level; and
• To allow young people to gain valuable skills related to Information Technologies (IT) thereby positioning them for longer-term employment.

The Youth Initiative is managed by Community Access Program Newfoundland and Labrador.  We are grateful for the funding support from Industry Canada that makes this initiative possible.

CAP NL administers both a Youth Intern and Regional Trainer program under the Youth Initiative:

1. Youth Interns work at a specific CAP site location within their community. They are hired and supervised by local staff and volunteers to provide training and support to CAP sites. Youth Interns are responsible for marketing and promoting CAP services to the public, offering group and individual computer training sessions, conducting information sessions and open houses, and facilitating cyber camps for youth.
2. The Regional Trainer program was launched in 2008-09 to provide training and learning opportunities at CAP sites throughout NL. These individuals are 'mobile trainers' who travel within the assigned regions of the province to market and promote CAP services, develop training materials & resources, and deliver programs & information sessions. Regional Trainers also develop partnerships with community groups and local businesses, as well as, investigate possibilities for training initiatives by identifying community needs. These positions are hired and supervised by CAP NL Staff in St. John's.

ELIGIBILITY

The Youth Initiative program is funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.  As such, all potential applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Between the ages of 15-30 years at the day of hire;
• A Canadian citizen, or permanent resident;
• Legally entitled to work in Canada; and
• If currently receiving EI Benefits, claim must be closed upon acceptance of the position.  This applies to both full-time and part-time positions.

Additionally, applicants must meet at least one (1) of the following:

• Be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, such as colleges, universities, schools of technology, CEGEP;
• Have completed at least 1 course at a university or other post-secondary institution; or
• Intend to return to school full time after the internship.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Youth Interns should have an interest in computers and technology, enjoy working with the public, possess strong communication and presentation skills, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism. Additionally, CAP sites may have special projects and responsibilities that reflect the demand and needs of the CAP site and community. These projects and responsibilities may require specific qualifications and unique skill sets. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact their CAP site directly for additional information.

Regional Trainers must possess a strong knowledge of computers and the Internet; Knowledge of software and hardware set-up; an understanding of advertising and marketing principles; training experience and/or strong presentation skills; enthusiasm and creativity; excellent communication skills; and, an interest in community-oriented economic development. Canadians should also enjoy working with the public and demonstrate a high level of professionalism. The ability to travel within assigned regions is essential.
